Ultramax Events is incredibly excited to announce our introduction into the world of Adventure racing. Ultramax will be offering two new events on the same day of racing: the AdventureMax 8-Hour Adventure Race and the AdventureMax Off-Road Team Triathlon.  The off-road team triathlon will kick off the 2010 Ultramax Championship Series. The AdventureMax 8-Hour and AdventureMax Off-Road Team Triathlon will be held March 6th at our incredibly popular Innsbrook Resort Venue.

The information that follows covers all of the details about both events. More will be added as we approach the event!

InnsbrookAbout Innsbrook:
Innsbrook is nestled in the forested hills of Warren County on more than 7,400 acres with 96 lakes. Less than an hour’s drive west of St. Louis, the development consists of a residential and recreational living community, resort condominiums, conference center, golf course, restaurant and stables.

The AdventureMax 8-Hour and Off-Road Team Triathlon will be staged on and around Innsbrook’s Lake areas.

In 1999, the Innsbrook Resort Community became the first resort in the continental United States to be certified as a cooperative sanctuary by Audubon International.

Innsbrook has a relationship with nature that's been crucial to its success. Now, Innsbrook's rededication to nature is being celebrated at an international level.

Innsbrook Resort will be the back drop for the largest majority of the events. Both events will leave the resort and travel out into the county. Innsbrook Resort is a true celebration of the natural environment, and offers the perfect location for a civilized adventure race.  March in Missouri can be unpredictable, so the event and YOUR TEAM must be prepared for anything. This is what makes adventure racing so exciting!

8-Hour Orienteering
There may be one, two, or more specific orienteering sections/courses.
A map and compass will used to locate a series of points (Control Points, “CP’s”) shown on a specialized topographic map. Strategic routes are chosen, on or off trail, that will help find all of the CP’s, therefore completing the orienteering course. Each CP is a distinct mapped feature, such as a stream junction, large boulder field or hilltop, and is marked with a standard orange/white orienteering control.

The AdventureMax orienteering section consists of a series of CP’s that may or may not be marked on the course map. You will need to come prepared to use your UTM tool to plot the UTM coordinates provided on a clue sheet included with your maps. On the ground, a control flag marks the location that the orienteer must visit.

To verify a visit, the orienteer uses a unique punch hanging next to the flag to mark the control card. The route between CP’s is not specified, and is entirely up to the orienteer; this element of route choice and the ability to navigate through the forest are the essence of orienteering.

The AdventureMax 8-Hour will use the following navigation techniques:
•Plotting Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates
•Map & Compass
•Bearings

8-Hour Map & Compass:
We provide you with Topographic maps that describe the shape of the land. They define and locate natural and manmade features (forests, creeks, lakes, buildings, bridges and roads).

Distances and directions take a bit of figuring, but the topography and features of the land are easy to determine. The topography is shown by contours. These are imaginary lines that follow the ground surface at a constant elevation and can provide information on the natural form of the land around you.

Throughout the AdventureMax Race you will navigate from place to place on land and water using topographic and other map forms and, of course, a compass.

However, you WILL be required to perform very basic map navigation/reading to complete the race. It will be very clear and will not be complicated. The course will be roughly marked, but some very basic map skills will be required. The Team Triathlon will also have Passports and will collect control points along the way on each leg of the race.
