Course Descriptions

SBPromoRun Course - The run course is a simple loop design on paved and packed gravel trails, staged entirely within Oakland Park. NO TRAFFIC! Arrows, signs and volunteers will help you. This is a primarily flat course with a nice grade to greet you at the finish line. Approximately 70% of the course will be on packed gravel trail. Plan accordingly if you plan to wear racing flats, lots of participants do, the surface is smooth. There will be one station on the run course, near the short course turn-around point. Aid Station Supplies: Heed * Water * Ice * Hammer Gel

Bike Course - The bike course is a loop design that begins at the Park. The course does not feature any significant hills, but there are a couple of inclines throughout the course. NOTE: The bike course is open to traffic. Usually, the vehicular traffic on race day is very minimal. Road surfaces are very good. Arrows, signs and volunteers will help guide you. There will be no bike aid stations on the course. Be prepared to carry all of your fluid and food requirements. Please remember it is your responsibility to know the bike course.

Transition Area (TA) - The entire transition area will be located near the Finish Line complex. You will rack your bikes on the assigned side, but the area will fill on first come first served basis.

Get full course maps and directions in the Course Maps Section. Please remember it is your responsibility to know the course.

Equipment

Bikes - It is appropriate to use any kind of bike at MaxTrax. It is easier to ride a road bike, hybrid bike or tri bike, as they have more gears (better for the few hills you'll encounter on the course). However, many people will ride mountain bikes, or other bikes they already have in their garage (or find in the family's/friends' garage!), and this is perfectly OK. If you want to purchase a bike for this event, you can usually get a decent "starter" bike for about $600-$800. If you are not sure how active you plan to be, as far as multi-sport racing, this is the best way to go. Your local bike shop (Cycle Extreme, in Columbia, sponsors this race) will know what is best for you. If you do buy a bike, make sure to have it a couple of weeks before the event, so you can practice riding it.
Clothes - Historically, the weather at MaxTrax calls for layers as it is normally cool in the morning (but you will heat up as you get into the race). If you want to wear different clothes for the different legs of the event, you do need to have a base layer that can be worn the entire time, as there is no covered place to change clothes. As much as we all hate to be seen in public in spandex, it is the safest and most comfortable option for biking (looser pants can get caught in your gears). You can get more specific info on clothing on the Training Page.

Timing Chip Notice & USAT Rules

Please follow these simple instructions carefully. Not wearing the transponder properly may prevent you from being timed. Transponders are non-transferable! Be careful not to switch with other participants. The chip must be on your ankle at all times or you will not be scored in the event. Your timing chip will be removed by volunteers once you reach the finish line. If you find you still have your timing chip after the race, please put it in a padded envelope and mail to: Ultramax Events 2902 Forum Blvd Suite 101 Columbia, MO 65203. YOU WILL BE CHARGED A $125 REPLACEMENT FEE IF YOU DO NOT RETURN YOUR TIMING TRANSPONDER. Failure to return a chip will result in disqualification from all future events owned or timed by Ultramax Events!

TEAMS - Teams will transfer their timing chip in the transition area. The last member of the team should wear the race number on the run leg. We recommend using a race belt for easy transfer. The timing chip must be on the ankle of each team member at all times while racing. Team entry is only available for the International Distance. Teams will not count towards Club Championship scoring.

USATUSA TRIATHLON SANCTIONING - You must bring a valid photo ID and your current USA Triathlon card to pick up your packet. To download a copy of your USAT card go to www.usatriathlon.org. One-day insurance is available at registration if you have not purchased it in your application. You cannot race without your yearly membership card or a one-day License. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO RACE WITHOUT A VALID PHOTO ID.

IDENTIFICATION - A wristband will be affixed to your wrist at check-in. This band will identify you as an official entrant and must be worn during the entire event. The wristband allows you access to the transition area and post–race food and beverages. You will not be allowed to remove your bicycle and gear from the transition area following the race without your wristband affixed to your wrist. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE YOUR WRISTBAND UNTIL AFTER THE AWARDS CELEBRATIONS!

BODY MARKING - Body marking will take place on race day. You will not be permitted in the transition area on race day without your wristband and your body marked. Do not apply body lotion or sunscreen until after you have been body marked. Be sure that the volunteer who marks you does so using your race number. Bring your race number with you.

Athletes MilkRACE RESULTS - Unofficial race results will be posted prior to the awards presentation. Please review the results and report any discrepancy to a race official PRIOR to the start of the awards presentation. Results will be considered official after the awards ceremony. Athletes who do not wear the timing chip or lose the chip during the event will not be scored. Please note that the clock at the finish line reflects the start time of the first wave. Race results will be posted online at www.ultramaxtri.com on race day.

USAT Athlete Excess Medical Policy
The athlete excess medical coverage protects each participant for the day of the event at USAT sanctioned races, camps and clinics. When athletes purchase a USAT annual license or one day permit, a portion of those fees cover the cost to provide them with excess medical insurance. This coverage only extends to their participation in a USA Triathlon sanctioned event and is only available after the injured party has filed with any primary insurance policies. A deductible does apply for this excess coverage.

If an athlete is injured while participating in a USA Triathlon sanctioned event, the following steps must be followed:
• Athletes must file with their primary healthcare provider (i.e. United Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, traveler’s insurance, etc.).
• Athlete completes a medical claim form. For serious incidents or for athletes requesting coverage, either the race
director or USAT can provide them with a medical claim form. The medical claim form along with an explanation of benefit documents should be sent directly from the athlete to the insurance company as indicated on the claim form. Please email sanction@usatriathlon.org for a copy of the form.
• Athletes will pay a deductible. All claimants will pay anywhere from $250.00 (two-hundred and fifty U.S. dollars) to $1,000.00 (one thousand U.S. dollars) out of pocket and possibly more for uncovered expenses.
Be advised that coverage may not apply to each and every claim. Additionally, coverage only extends to participants that have purchased an USA Triathlon annual license or one-day permit and were injured through participation in a USA Triathlon sanctioned event. Please email questions to sanction@usatriathlon.org

USATUSA TRIATHLON (USAT) competition rules will apply. These rules are found in the Triathlon Competition guidebook (usatriathlon.com).

Please Note: Per USAT rules, all athletes must present a photo ID at registration. NO ONE will be permitted to race without a photo ID. Also, YOU must pick up your own packet - you cannot have someone pick up your packet for you.

USAT’s “Age Up” Policy:

An athlete's age for any USAT sanctioned race will be his/her age as of Dec. 31, 2010. The age he/she is on 12/31 will determine his/her racing age group. If an athlete is due to "age-up" into the next group, it will happen at the beginning of the year, not after the athlete's birthday. This action aligns regular U.S. age group racing with the method used by USA Triathlon for its National Rankings Program and its new Grand Prix Series.

Example: John Smith is 39 and will turn 40 on November 20, 2010.
John will be considered 40 for all 2010 races – and will race in the 40-44 age group at all 2010 races.

This same policy applies to the all race categories in Ultramax races (Open, Clydesdale, etc).

HELMETS - Each athlete is required to wear an approved helmet during the bike segment. You must have your helmet securely fastened on your head before you mount and dismount your bike. Drafting and blocking (impeding the progress of passing cyclists) are not permitted during the race. USAT officials will monitor the bike course and strictly enforce these rules.

The Ultramax Crew - Be Part of It!

volunteerAre your friends and/or family coming to the event? Are they interested in volunteering while you race? We have positions where they can see you start, race and then be there at the finish line to greet you. Nearly 100% of all unsolicited racer comments include praise for our volunteers; this is truly what makes these events possible. The racers really appreciate your time because they know and realize they could not pursue this sport without volunteers. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact us at info@ultramaxtri.com

GMRIf you register online, you will receive an email confirmation immediately. If you mail in your registration form, please allow up to 3 weeks for processing. In 2010, you can go to www.getmeregistered.com to verify your entry in all Ultramax events.
